Message from NW Seaport Alliance...

Tomorrow, July 1st a new International Maritime Organization rule goes into effect that requires container lines to receive verified gross mass declaration before loading a container onto a ship. The amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea convention, approved by the IMO in 2014, is aimed at cracking down on misdeclared container weights which have contributed to maritime accidents.

The attached table provides the latest information on NW Seaport Alliance Marine Terminals position on SOLAS and how export containers will be handled at the gate.

We do encourage shippers to also check with the ocean carriers for their actual policy on procedures when submitting a VGM to the ocean carrier.
